Marble & Other Natural Stones ~ Used for Looks Rather than Durability
Marble has two definitions :
#1 - Scientific - Was limestone at one time undergoing intense pressures and high temperatures inside the earth altering the crystaline composition. With the addition of other minerals, this created the colors and veining we see today.
Marble - #2 - Commercial: Any type of stone (other than granite) which is possible to be polished, is also considered marble.
i.e., travertine, onyx, limestone
Limestone ~ Sedimentary rock mainly consisting of calcium carbonate. Layered and formed from skeletons and shells of sea creatures that lived in warm seas millions of years ago. Limestone consists of many stones which are also considered marble for being able to be "polished".
Travertine ~ Forming slowly in hot, mineral rich pools, this type of stone is also known as a chemical limestone. Voids, holes and pores were created in the stone by gas bubbles not reaching the surface.
Slate ~ Is sedimentary rock shale with a very fine grain. Sometimes used in its natural "cleft" state, it can also be used as a "honed" stone and can be very durable with a "used" look.
Onyx ~ Is a layered calcitic stone formed in caves with stalactites and stalagmites. Slow precipitation of cold mineral rich waters gives onyx its beautiful translucent, pastel colors and veining.
